Honda P0172 Fuel System Too Rich
Code P0172 Honda is DTC code indicates that the air-fuel mixture in engine is too rich. This means that there is too much fuel and not enough air in the combustion process. The engine control module monitor the oxygen sensor in exhaust system to decide the air-fuel ratio. If it detect a rich condition for extended period of time it trigger p0172.
Possible Causes Code P0172 Honda
1.Faulty mass air flow sensor sending incorrect information to engine control module resulting in rich fuel condition.
2.Oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen in exhaust system. Faulty or contaminated oxygen sensor may send incorrect information to engine control module resulting rich fuel condition.
3.Clogged or leaking fuel injector causing too much fuel to be injected into engine resulting in rich fuel condition.
4.Choked or dirty air filter restricting flow of air into the engine resulting rich fuel condition.
5.Fuel pressure regulator control the amount of fuel sent to fuel injectors. Faulty fuel pressure regulator may send too much fuel to the engine resulting in rich fuel condition.
6.Unmetered air entering the engine through vacuum leak resulting rich fuel condition.
Honda P0172 Possible Symptoms
1.Too much fuel leads to decreased fuel economy.
2.Rich fuel condition can cause engine to idle rough or stall.
3.When air-fuel ratio is too rich engine may not accelerate properly.
4.Rich fuel condition can cause smell of unburned fuel from exhaust.
5. If air fuel ratio is too rich black smoke may be emitted from the exhaust.
How To Fix P0172 Honda
1.Faulty mass airflow sensor may send incorrect information to engine control module. Clean mass airflow sensor with specialized cleaner or replace it if found damaged.
2.Faulty oxygen sensor may send incorrect information to engine control module. If oxygen sensor is found faulty replacing the oxygen sensor is most effective solution.
3.Fuel injector may become choked or leak overtime. Clean fuel injector with specialized cleaning solution or ultrasonic cleaning to remove dirt.
4.Replacing air filter can help to prevent this issue.
5.If fuel pressure regulator is faulty it may send too much fuel to engine. Replacing faulty fuel pressure regulator can help to solve this issue.
6.Check hoses, valves and connection for any signs of damage repair it or replace it.
Its important to have the vehicle inspected and diagnosed by professional mechanic to find and resolve issue related with p0172 for proper repair.
